Coldsmoke 2012 is shaping up to be a truly homegrown Kootenay event. Three days of clinics, competitions and social evenings will provide both experienced and debutant backcountry skiers and snowboarders with fantastic learning opportunities and tons of fun. Now in its 6th year it offers a concentrated curriculum of powder enlightenment that is difficult to find anywhere else.
It's a good idea to pre-register at the Coldsmoke Web Site as clinics have sold out in past years. Friday's offering is a day-long program of personal feedback in a group clinic at basic, intermediate, advanced and expert skill levels. Tele and AT are often grouped separately. Saturday and Sunday are full or half -day clinics; your choice. The range is eclectic: from Rippin Chix with Alison GannettIn The Groove Tour with Greg Hill and Medical Mystery Tour with Mike Innis MD, to Freeskiing with Eric Pahota. The clinic instructors in my experience are both gifted athletes as well as excellent teachers.
I always go for the Full Monty option ($450), because the evening programs are well worth attending. Friday night's opener held at Nelson's theatre features ski/snowboard films and draw prizes. Saturday evening includes an apres ski party, the Buff-Eh dinner provided by Whitewater's Fresh Tracks Cafe team, and a Kootenay Hootenanny with bands, bonfires and games.
Plan to stay in Nelson and book your accommodation in advance. Hotel rooms are available as low as $49 per night. A free shuttle is available from downtown to the resort. The drive from Vancouver is 8 - 10 hours so best to book yourself free to head up on Thursday, Feb 23rd and return on Monday, Feb 27th. Consider staying an extra day or two to enjoy some of the Kootenay's legendary powder.
Add your name to this event if you would like to go. The number of folks willing to drive will determine the group size. Email me if you have any questions.
