Mount Slalok (Rex's Pillar) via Stonecrop Face (PD) Slalok is the third highest peak in the Joffre Group at 2650 meters. We will ascend via the Stonecrop Face Route (PD) as described in Alpine Select. From the summit we'll have impressive views of Matier, Joffre and the Anniversary Glacier. We'll travel in on Saturday morning and set up camp with a leisurely afternoon to prep our gear, practice skills if we want, and rest up for Sunday morning's summit push. The approach will be via the 5.5 km Upper Joffre Lake trail, which takes us through the forest past three lakes, each one more scenic that the last. We'll camp somewhere above the third lake (backcountry permit required). Sunday morning will be an alpine start at approximately 3 AM. The route follows Tzsil Creek until we reach a wide easy coulour, which climbs past rock bands to the toe of the Stonecrop Glacier. Depending on conditions, we expect to follow an open, moderate line on slopes of up to 45 degrees. Descent will be via either same route or along the west ridge (Class 3 scramble) to the moraine and back to Tzsil Creek. We'll pack up camp and hike out. We expect to be back in Vancouver on Sunday evening
