Had a good practice session on Mt Seymour last night. 15 turned out to learn or refresh their avalanche victim search & extraction skills. Managed to get 50% group rental gear discount from little known locally grown sporting goods retailer. Contrary to apprehensions of road condition difficulties due to a snow squall blowing through town the night before and predicted bad (very mild and rainy) weather, a clearing trend developed late in the day and those who had the fortitude (jam) to remain on the trip list were greeted with balmy and clearing conditions by the time we arrived at the Seymour cafeteria (6:30). The downstairs lunchroom made a pretty good setting to spend almost an hour going over the feartures and uses of beacons, probes and shovels, as well as other practical elements involved in companion rescue. By about 7:30 we were ready to hit the trail. We broke into 3 teams of 5. At staggered locations along the trail to Seymour Peak 1 person from each team set off to bury a beacon and returned to the team where upon all advanced along the trail until the shout avalanche was heard. In all cases teams with Tracker 2 beacons victims were located to within 1/2 meter within 40 seconds. Probes were used to identify victim depth and orientation, left in place, and conveyor belt shovelling techniques used to remove snow from around victims head and chest,as well as create a first aid and evacuation platform. Enough snow (Mt Seymour special lite) was removed within 10 minutes in each case to potentially extract and attend to the avalanche victim. Each party was able to repeat the above excercise another 2 times before calling it a night at about 9:30. This is really a good way to find out who to go with or allow to register for your winter trip. These folks all made the grade. Leader and reporter rob brusse. Partipants in no particular order of merit, jeff han, andrei pipas, caroline reid, matthew reid, sven hafemeister, byron houston, ian ross, patrick sullivan geraldine meade, matthew jensen and gregory magolan.
