Write Up:
A clear, sunny day for this spectacular round trip above Buntzen Lake with vistas in all directions. Congenial company with Lorenzo Garlappi and his friend and colleague Frank Bessembinder from Salt Lake City, Franziska Bergmann and Oliver Wicke et moi Gillian. An eight hour varied hike innitially skirting the lake to the trail head, upwards first brushing through the bushes, refreshed by the dew, to proceed steeply up through the trees protected from the sun on the switch backs. Limited water flowing over the Swan Falls but a number of glimpses westward over Buntzen, Seymour, Deep Cove and Indian Arm. Shortly before the intersection to Dilly Dally Mountain, Oliver was tempted by a rocky area for a scramble (which would need investigation) we took the right fork towards Eagle Peak now open with rocky out crops but easy going. At the top of Mount Beautiful as it is also very appropriately named we sat on the rocks to have lunch, and most of all absorb the majestic surroundings stretching away from us in all directions. Coquitlam Lake below, the reservoir from which part of Metro Vancouver water comes, Golden Ears, Southern part of Pacific Range, Skagit range, Baker, Fraser River, etc. Then on our interesting descent through blue huckleberries and other berries to Linsay Lake, where we were not tempted to swim. Along the scenic westerly flank of the bluffs with intermittent view points over the inlet Howe Sound, Vancouver, the Gulf and San Juan Islands, Vancouver Island and even to the Olympic Mountains. Finally a lengthy switch back descent to the parking lot to grab our duck shoes and bathing suits. Race to the lake and dive in to rest out legs and 'glowing' bodies! A great reward and a memorable day. Nothing technical about this trip in August, moderately strenuous and perfect for new fit hikers and visitors for a splendid view of our surrounding mountains.
